Ok, so a mate and myself are considering buying one each to expand our travels.

We have done quite a bit of touring around our country but mainly on sealed roads, now we would like to explore dirt roads and tracks and continue to camp. The Ural attraction is the stability, ruggedness of the build and apparent easy to work on design, plus we can carry an esky (icebox) for food and drink, a welcome change from camping off the Tbird.

I have heard some negative stuff about them, but have also heard that about our bikes, so what are peoples experiences? I have also heard that the later models are a huge improvement on earlier stuff as they have Brembo discs all round and a reliable EFI system.

We have no illusions about speed, 80-90 kph on dirt is all we expect.

only from what ive read, and you would have loked them up too they are a lot better now than the early days, most of the running gear etc are sourced from Japan, and no carbies...Ask Jimbo , its the best fun going slow...Of course you will get negative comments from this Forum, but stick to your plans, get out and have fun with it...Half these blokes just want to polish and not ride

I would imagine that they are well capable of doing what you will need. After all, if it wasn't for the Ural, Russia would probably not have won against the Germans because of its capabilities. It's got history and now getting really popular. Easy to fix is what you need.

Go for it.

Thanks Greg for your constructive comments (unlike SOME ), and yes I have spoken to Jim and he didn't have any negative comments at all. I won't be buying new, maybe 2015 onwards so not concerned about losing money, it's about a new challenge and an extension to my riding/camping lifestyle.

I'm not expecting a whole lot from the brand but having had a look at a 2012 model I like the old school engineering, I'm aware that it will be challenging, especially on the sealed roads, I may not even like it but am prepared to give it a go if all my research ends up with enough positives.

I havent heard anything too negative about them,Lee. and jimbo liked his.
They would be ideal for what you need.
Ural Australia are having an open day on the 28th, where you can take one for a long ride. Unfortunately I cant go, as I am working that weekend, and it is in my home town of Uralla.

That's good to hear mate. I knew about the demo ride and it would have been perfect but we both will be up on Fraser island then. I did ask Ural on facebook if they do demo rides during the week, twice, but they have dodged the question.

Maybe Gerry can find out why his club members disliked them and post it up.

I have just got back from a holiday in Russia. Tried to find a bike dealer to look around but no luck. My Russian isn't at all good. Not many bikers around either - but taking the car drivers skills in hand I reckon being a biker in Russia is a short lived hobby.

I spoke to the Ex Urinal Owner(KH a Mature Age Rider ) that sold his and His comments were, They are not as bad as people make them out to be, However they are Bloody expensive to run ie, 7.8 to 8 Ltrs/100 Klms, His was Fuel Injected but didnt think there was much difference between EFI & Carbys. The Fuel tank is not real big and a spare 10 ltr tanks comes with the unit. They are Bloody hard work to ride and to handle and they have to be set up right or you just wont go anywhere. Hard on Tyres and that is because of the riding techniques that you have to use to make them go around corners and curves. He was glad to get rid of it as it was too much hard effort to ride and He couldn't go places where he normally goes on 2 wheels, In Oz you cant do 2 wheel drive as the Chair is on the wrong side/outlet of the bike.

The Other Bike ( Originated brand new out of Sydney and was transported up here ) it failed an Alternator, and the Wheels cracked on it?? and had to be replaced, and it was an absolute pig of a bike to ride until it was ( taken down to Rockhampton ) and set up and aligned properly.

KH says they would be ideal for what your proposing, ie. taking all day to get somewhere, being absolutely stuffed when you get there, loading heaps of gear in them and doing some dirt work. but dont forget they are not available in 2 wheel drive.

Hope this helps.

Errr, they don't come with a chair and they don't have leading link front end, to get one set up properly would be too expensive.

It's two nights (except Kandos) , and who cares, it's all about the ride there and back, that's why I like them two or three states away and we have a great time bush camping.

hi there.
met a couple from England in West Aus years ago who travelled around the world on a old Ural with sidecar and a trailer..They had come up to Aus through the Middle East and India and Asia. Been on the road for a couple of years by then.(he was retired royal navy).
They were headed for Sydney to jump a boat to America .
They reckoned it was the best way to travel....slow and steady.

It's good to have an end to the journey, buts it's the journey that matters in the end.
